From the beginning, the Buddha points out that suffering and pain for us and for others are caused by desire. Within the untrained mind, desire leads directly to the actions that will fulfill it. We are gripped by the delusion that the fulfillment of desire will bring happiness.
When we abandon certain negative actions and cultivate certain positive actions, we can eliminate desire and foster peace and contentment within ourselves as well as influence those qualities in others.
